High Maintenance - This term has been tossed around since Harry Burns met Sally Albright around 1989. It comes with all kinds of negative connotations but we can't seem to decide exactly what it means.
It could describe a woman who knows exactly what she wants as well as a woman who changes her mind. I've heard it in reference to women who are independent as often as those who are presumed needy or spoiled. Most of all, it's used to label women who are meticulous about their appearance or home....pretty much anyone with high standards.
Is any of this really negative?
We should all stop apologizing.
THE GOOD NEWS IS....
Thanks to the self-care revolution, high maintenance is becoming an admirable quality! Women are encouraged to be health conscious planners and goal-setters! Maintaining yourself means unloading the baggage that messes with your well-being and blocks you from purposeful, abundant living.
Does your atmosphere need a little detox? Have you considered cutting back on inflammatory foods? Are you banishing clutter? Are you ridding your home and beauty regimen from harmful chemicals? Are you ridding your mind from harmful thoughts? Do you have the courage to set boundaries with harmful people? Are you ready to change those bad habits that keep you stuck?
If your answer is YES, you know these things don't happen spontaneously. Positive, lasting change requires space, focus, intention, planning and dedication.....maintenance.
IT'S WORTH IT AND YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
You don't have to look far to find ladies architecting their best lives. Some are in tribes. Some are lone wolves. But they're out there doing it through education, wellness, entrepreneurship, service and lots of faith. These gals know they can't give their loved ones or their goals their bravest and best without retreating often for rejuvenation and re-evaluation.
CREATE PHYISICAL SPACE IN YOUR HOME FOR THIS.
Begin where you are. Do whatever you can to establish a sanctuary in your everyday surroundings. Optimize it for self-care and reflection. Use it religiously. Reset.....then go tackle your goals!
Take care of the space that takes care of you and be unapologetically High Maintenance.
